Sakura is built on the shoulders of the open-source NScripter and ONScripter communities, and wouldn’t exist without their decades of work.

Sakura embeds the following engines to actually run your games:

  • NScripter by Naoki Takahashi — the original visual novel scripting engine this whole ecosystem is built around.
  • ONScripter by Ogapee — the open-source reimplementation of NScripter that made it portable.
  • ONScripter-EN — the English-focused ONScripter fork whose compatibility work underpins Sakura’s classic engine on iOS.
  • ONScripter-RU by the Umineko Project — the GPU-accelerated ONScripter fork Sakura uses for demanding modern titles like Umineko no Naku Koro ni.

Sakura relies on a number of open-source libraries for archive extraction, UI, and file transfer, in addition to the engines above. See Licensing & Attribution for the full list, their licenses, and links to their source.
